What is a community foundation?

Community foundations are nonprofit organizations established to meet the current and future needs of our local communities. We are also a trusted and valuable resource to individuals, families and their professional advisors. The Polk County Community Foundation was founded in 1975 by local philanthropists who wanted to make a difference in our community for generations to come.

What territory does the Polk County Community Foundation serve?

The Polk County Community Foundation serves the citizens of of Polk County, NC and the surrounding area, which includes Landrum, SC.

Who is eligible for grants and scholarships from the Community Foundation?

Grants and scholarships are available to local Polk County, North Carolina or Landrum, South Carolina organizations, students, and teachers. Different funds have different eligibility guidelines. Please contact us to discuss your situation and learn more.

When are grant applications due?

How much money is available for grants?

Most competitive grants have ranged from under $1,000 for small items and programs to tens of thousands of dollars for large projects to benefit our community. Scholarships awarded by the Community Foundation are a minimum of $1,000. Contact Noah Wood, our Director of Grants, for current funds available.

How can I apply for a scholarship from the Community Foundation?

Scholarships are currently offered to graduating high school seniors and adults in Polk County, North Carolina and Landrum, South Carolina. Applications and deadline information is available on the scholarships page.

How is the Polk County Community Foundation funded?

The Community Foundation is funded entirely through local charitable contributions given to benefit our local community. We are a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity.

How can I make a contribution or start a fund at the Community Foundation?

It begins with a personal conversation with our our President & CEO, Sara Bell. Please contact Sara for more information about philanthropic opportunities at the Community Foundation. Our office on South Trade Street in Tryon is open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Thursday, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
